Bayern's world-famous 4-4-2 heritage
Por Raphael Honigstein
Today, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told BILD that 4-4-2 has been "the culture" at the club for "over twenty years" and that he expects Van Gaal to perfect the system.

Hmm, let's see. Twenty years, since 1989? Oh, yes, I remember: Bayern didn't play the sweeper system with Augenthaler at the time but an ultra-modern 4-4-2 that revolutionized European football. Arrigo Sacchi later copied the system from Latttek and Henyckes.

Throughout the early 90s Bayern also never played with someone called Matthäus as sweeper. Never heard of him.

Then, when Hitzfeld took over, he didn't play 4-3-3 in his first season.

And in 2001, he didn't win the Champions League playing with three at the back, including Andersson as sweeper.

No, it's been always 4-4-2.

well, kalle does a lot of rubbish talking. but we all know that dont we raphael. interestingly, what i am worried about is that even though van gaal clearly prefers a 433 formation (or his self-styled 2-3-2-3) he doesnt have the players for it at bayern. what he is instead doing is reverting to the 'dreaded' rhomb. how successful do you think he will be at replicating his success at bayern you think? given the constraints obviously.
